Genetics

I have a different view on genetics than most, my view is based on research and based on what I have seen and whitnessed. I am not saying it is right and everyone else is wrong, I am only giving my view of the matter.

There is new research being done on epigenetics that is epi- meaning above... or above genetics. A greater motivator. This is just now being researched by scientists and it probably won't reach the dog world for another 5-10 years. What epigenetics are, is basically genetics that are controlled by environment. Most like to blame all ailments on genetics alone, but how to we explain a twin that gets cancer and the other doesn't? Identical dna- yet different outcomes.

Here is a great article about epigenetics

Now I know some may be howling by now, but I and others have reason to believe that PRA, hip dysplasia and others are NOT fully hereditary in nature. There may be a gene for PRA, hip dysplasia etc.. but it has to be "unlocked" by certain environmental factors. These may include diet, exercise, variation of predispostion to the disease and happiness, surely a dog who is happy is more healthy that a cage kept dog standing in its oun excreta all day.

 More to come...
